You may find it strange that I’m posting about the appointment of a bishop in a diocese that is not my own, but there is a very good reason why I should.
It has been announced tonight Australian time – midday in Rome as is the custom – that Pope Francis has appointed Fr Brian Mascord, currently the Vicar-General of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle (there’s the link!) and Parish Priest of Mackillop Parish, as the fifth Bishop of Wollongong in succession to Bishop Peter Ingham.
This appointment is full of melancholy, not only because Brian is a good man, a good priest who will make a good bishop, is also a good friend. The diocese, and I, are going to miss him once he takes up his new role and ministry, and the people of the Church of Wollongong will be receiving a man and a priest who will be a good shepherd to them.
