The “Right” Kind of Multiculturalism

The current Federal Government, according to media reports, is seeking to resurrect their proposed changes to the requirements for immigrants seeking to obtain Australian citizenship, in a slightly modified form from the same proposals that were defeated in the Australian Senate last year.

Given that the proposed changes are basically built on fear-mongering and a false understanding of multiculturalism, one can only hope that the new version is likewise roundly condemned by the Australian public and defeated once again in the Australian Senate.

On their Facebook page, the Welcome to Australia organisation summed it up this way:

Being a loyal and good citizen is about respect, working hard to provide for your family, extending a helping hand, and mateship.

It has nothing to do with how well you speak English.

This bill has been defeated before, and it should be defeated again.

You belong and you are welcome here!

Couldn’t have said it better myself!

‘Ethnic separatism’ putting Australia’s multicultural society at risk: government

Citizenship minister Alan Tudge has warned “complacency” could lead to more separated ethnic diasporas in Australia, flagging a renewed government push to reform the citizenship test. The government will soon try to pass an edited version of its changes to the Australian citizenship test, which were voted down in the Senate last year by Labor and the crossbench.
